The Rio Grande and Southern Pacific both wanted locomotives that could pull heavier loads through the mountains. SP went to Krauss-Maffei,a German company, who built for them the ML4000 Diesel Hydraulic locomotives. The DRGW decided to purchase three to test as well. However, the Rio Grande was not completely satisfied with their performance and sold them to SP, who also went back to K-M to order more, ending up with 21 ML4000s.
